Etymology: Unknown. To ἄρδω with suffix -σος as in ἄλσος etc. (Schwyzer 513; Forbes, Glotta 36, 1958, 254)? The suffix -σος, however, may be a substr. element (Fur. 254 n. 27). Gurmani, Studi Pisani I 512, compares Hitt. arši- `Pflanzung, Kultur'.
